About Cabin Creek Timber
Frames
A
man who works with his hands is a laborer;
A man who works with his hands and
brains is a craftsman; but a man who
works with his hands and his brain and his
heart is an artist. |

A bit of history -
While
touring the country for the family owned
children's camps, Camp Glen Arden and Camp
Arrowhead, I saw the great barns built by the
Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I was
hooked. I wanted to learn the lore and the
skills of timber framing.
At that time
Camp Glen Arden and Camp Arrowhead had been in
the family for fifty years. I went on to
incorporate a timber framing program into the
summer activities there. Each year we would
build small cabins for overnight camping trips
in the surrounding forests. Later when the new
Camp Arrowhead campus was built, I built a
twenty four stall timber frame horse barn, a
timber frame blacksmith shop, and a timber frame
climbing wall and pavilion. (to

applications) or (timber
frame stables, barns and workshops).

We sold the family camping
business in 1996. The summer of 2007 Camp Arrowhead held
its seventy- fifth reunion. Family members present that
day included my 91 year old mother, Mary Kellogg Bell,
my brother Ed Bell, and me.
I started Cabin
Creek in response to requests from family and friends
that I build their timber frames and then timber frames
for friends of friends
.
What's in a
name? Cabin Creek derives its name from the fact that my
brothers and I grew up on Cabin Creek on Cabin Creek
Road, in Tuxedo, NC, which is near Flat Rock, NC. The
Green River flows through the area.
Cabin Creek
Timber Frames is a family owned business. In 1996 we
built our first timber frame for someone else - for
money. Our first shop here in the Cartoogechaye area of
Franklin, NC was a 24' x 48' timber frame shop of
eastern white pine. In 2002 we moved to a downtown
industrial site in Franklin, NC, into a 6,000 sq ft
cutting shop and office. In September 2005 we moved into
our new facility at 6624 Georgia Rd., Franklin, NC. Our
new location features a timber frame office and design
center of eastern white pine.
(to
view pictures of the office complex interiors).
Next
to the office is the new hand cutting beamery 6,000 sq.
ft. Alongside the hand cutting beamery is the 1, 500 sq.
ft. machine shop. Our storage facility 1000 sq. ft. is
also timber frame construction of eastern white pine.

the beamery, and other buildings).
Cabin
Creek's Design & Sales Staff:
Joe
Bell, aka: "Dr. Joe"- I am the
owner-operator of Cabin Creek Timber Frames; I have a
number of years of experience as a timber framer and CAD
Designer. I now spend the majority of my time as part of
our sales staff. However I do accompany most of the
timber frames when they are raised.
I was born
and raised in Tuxedo, NC. I attended Christ School in
Arden, NC, before going to The University of North
Carolina in Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. After
graduating from UNC Medical School, I did my internship
at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, then two years in
the US Navy as a medical officer in
South Viet Nam, and at the Naval Hospital, Annapolis,
MD. Transportation and facilities were provided by the
United States Navy and the Department of Defense. Then I
did my residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital,
Chapel Hill, NC. |
 |
|
In 1974 I taught
anesthesiology at the University Of Colorado School Of
Medicine in Denver, Colorado. I then practiced
anesthesia in both South Carolina and North Carolina
from 1975 to 2005 when I retired. Shortly after
retiring, I was brought out of retirement as part of a
State Medical Assistance Team that set up an emergency
hospital in a K-Mart parking lot in Waveland, MS, just
after Hurricane Katrina. The hospital had two operating
rooms, 12 ICU beds, and room for about 100 cots. We did
some surgical procedures there, but most of the work was
outpatient. The mobile hospital unit was carried on two
18 wheelers. |

| Kevin Lanier, Experienced
timber framer, CAD designer, was a deputy sheriff for
Cobb County, Georgia for eight years. Kevin moved to the
area in 1966 and became an apprentice timber framer at
Upper Loft Designs. |
 |
|
In the six years he was at
Upper Loft Designs he worked from apprentice to shop
foreman. Kevin initially worked with us as a timber
framer and later as a designer. He came back to Cabin
Creek Timber Frames in 2005, after a two year hiatus
with Goshen Timber Frames.
Kevin has a broad
knowledge of the universal building codes and what is
feasible for different areas of the United States. Kevin
is one of Cabin Creek Timber Frames compound joinery
instructors both in our beamery and in our timber frame
workshops.
Among his many interest are brewing
fine ale. Both he and his wife enjoy traveling, mostly
abroad.
Pictured below are some of the projects
Kevin has designed for Cabin Creek Timber Frames.

| Tracy Bailey,
Sales Associate Tracy works closely with our
clients from the initial phone call or email through the
design process, cutting, trial fitting and erection of
the timber frame on its site. |

I am a native of Franklin,
NC. I have worked with both Dr. Joe and Miss Jo for over
11 years now, the first six years in the Out Patient
Medicine Dept at Angel Medical Center, located in
Franklin, NC. Since joining Cabin Creek Timber Frames,
more than five years ago I have been active in sales and
marketing. It has been very rewarding. I have worked
with quite a number of people in building their dream
timber frame homes. I worked closely with Daniel Lee
Architecture, Alexandria, VA and Ramsey-Daugherty
Contractors, Nashville, TN on an oak great room and
octagonal sun room for the former Senate Majority Leader
Bill Frist and his wife. We hope to have completed
pictures of this project mid 2008. I also worked closely
with a couple to facilitate the building of the first
timber frame structure to be approved by building dept.,
in Newnan, October, 2007. |
| Please let me know if I
can be of any assistance to you in planning your timber
frame dream home or structure. If you will call or email
me then details of your project I should be able to take
them and give you a rudimentary price on your plans - to
see if they would fit into your budget, before advancing
to an actual timber frame design. I can be reached by
email at
tbailey@cabincreektimberframes.com
or by phone at 369-5899 ext 301. |

John
Booker, Experienced timber
framer: Although John is not a 'native'
he moved to the Highlands-Cashier area with his parents
at age eight. He attended Blue Ridge school in Cashiers
before obtaining his degree from South Western Community
College in Sylva, NC. He works closely with Kevin to see
that all our work comes together like fine furniture.
The separate pendants and corbels that have to be turned
on a lathe are done by John. He and his son live in a
'post and beam' home he and his father and brother built
in 1986. John has added a Cabin Creek compound joinery
16' x 18' entry porch and a stunning gazebo by the small
trout pond on their property. |
